The University of Tartu Philosophicum Hall Gallery (Jakobi 2, Tartu) welcomes February with the art of Alexandra Milyakina, researcher at the Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics. The exhibition „Sketches of the university town“ opens on Friday, 7th February at 15.00.
„Tartu is the university and the university is Tartu“ says the author. Alexandra, also known as Sashami, first came to Tartu in 2013 to take part in a conference but decided to stay here for good. The exhibition offers a choice of pictures of the yards and streets of Tartu, the buildings that Alexandra sees while walking towards the university, and cafes where it’s nice to sit after a full day of lectures. Projects associated with the University of Tartu, including illustrations for study materials, postcards, souvenirs and much more, hold a special place in the exhibition.
In 2024, Alexandra was awarded a Cultural Endowment of Estonia scholarship that supports the creative work of academic staff. She used the scholarship to create an interactive map of Tartu with more that 350 drawings of different buildings. The map can be found at the website sashami.opsti.ee. Author of the idea and technical execution is Kira Harlašova.
The exhibition „Sketches of the university town“ remains open until 30 March 2025. Entrance to the exhibition is free of charge during the usual opening hours of Jakobi 2: Mon-Fri 8.00-19.45 and Sat-Sun 8.00-18.00 (may differ during holidays).
